Im attempting to dp the budget roll on paint job. How do i remove the black trim moulding around yhe car? Is it held by clips or just double sided taped? Do i simply pull it out?
If you mean the black plastic strips on the doors and mudguards, they're just taped on, you slide a blade under one end and work it until the end comes loose, then just slowly peel them off.
how about the seals around the door and hatch? great to know... thanks! and what glue works well when re-attaching them? on another note, how do we remove the seals around the door and hatch areas?
The rubber weather seals? The hatch seal you just pull off, not sure on the door seals, I've never done them
I used 3M automotive double sided acryl tape to re-attach. Be aware it is 1x on and non movable after putting it there
The exterior seal in the hatch area.. On mine, it is kinda liftin up and some dirt aretrapped underneath. although not leaking, i wanted to clean it up and fux it.
yep, -the rubber around the doors pulls off, there are two (iirc) little clips by the vent/mirror area. you just push in the center to release them. -hatch just pulls off, aswell as the trim/moulding. -if your prepping for paint DONT mess with the trim around the glass. just cover it to paint. i learned this the hard way....unless you plan to pull all the glass.
How do i resolve the exterior seal from lifting? What i was thinking is to actually apray some rubberized sealer around it?
rear bumper cover Anyone who can give me some tips and tricks on how to remove the rear bumper cover in preparation for painting?
The easiest way to remove the bumper is to un-snap the 2 ends of bumper skin close to the wheel arches. Then just remove the 4 bolts in the bottom of the truck area the holds the entire bumper to the back of the car. Once you've removed the whole assembly the cover is easily removed by just removing the 18-20 nuts and bolts that retain the cover. Here is what it looks like without the bumper cover and the plastic clips are mounted just ahead of the bumper support, not on the car in this picture.... http://smg.photobucket.com/user/racerb/media/GTS Race Mods/PartsForSale024.jpg.html?sort=3&o=19 racerb :wink
Thanks. I got the bumper out but did not bother removing the cover due to heavily rusted bolts... I was also able to remove all exterior trim molding but left tons of dried double sided tape... What ia the moat effective way of removing the left over tape from the tried mineral spirits but had little luck
Try the heat gun trick to soften the glue, then use a plastic putty knife to scrape the majority of it off. When you've done all that head down to Walmart and get you a can of pure orange air freshener, spray it all over the remaining glue and just rub it off. This stuff works great and smells really good too! http://www.walmart.com/ip/Pure-Citrus-Orange-Air-Freshener-7-fl-oz/15724124 This is what my Wife uses at work to remove glue from the store shelving when changing out prices and product info. I also used it when I removed all the lettering from my enclosed trailer..... Will this work for the decal on the spoiler as well? Yeah majority of the tape is gon.... Just remnanta of the tape remains...
Yea the Pure Citrus (orange) will remove any decal or tape glue you have on your car. Buy at least a couple cans, I went through 5-6 cans doing my 20 enclosed trailer. racerb irat
Thanks for the tip. Will try to get some tomorrow so i can start rolling some primer.. Maaco quoted me 1400 but im doing it for less than 150. Unfortunately, due to inflation, the 50bux paint job no longer exist... Hopefull my local walmart has the pure citrus you were referring to...
I went to walmart today but my local store didnt have any.. I got some googone that is apparently citrus based oil so ill try my luck theren and use a blow dryerm.m
Good luck with that, I don't know why Walmart sometimes runs out of that stuff, but if you can get it later it really works!! racerb :hsdance
The combo of hair dryer and citrus oil did the trick... The decals are off and i only have one side of moulding adhesive residue to work on... With a sore thumb, i had to call it a day... Will continue tomorrow and hopefully i can finish priming the whole car and sand it by noon... Then lay at least 2coats of color... Ill be using rustoelum charcoal gray...
