89 Celica GTS Transmission question

I was going to post in the sticky up top, but I didn't want to tie it up with my question.

I was told that the 5 speed manual transmission use automatic transmission fluid, even the mechanic's manual I have says that. Is that not the case? Is it recommended to now switch to a gear oil? If so where can I find this information.

I picked up this non-running celica, with a broken shift cable. I replaced the shit cable with a used set off of ebay (all I could find) When I got it running it would pop out of 5th gear. I got another transmission and it was nasty inside so I took it back. The next transmission was opened up and looked great. However now I am still popping out of 5th gear. It seems like it's not as bad now and only when I accelerate hard at 80 mph. If I am cruising it only sometimes pops out of 5th.

After 2,000 miles the cv axle output shaft seal started leaking. I had to do a quick side of the road fix with a cheaper seal and it started leaking again, roughly 2000 miles later. I think it's a seal issue, as I don't feel any play in the axle.

    Any input?

I used ATF as specified until it started getting notchy in 2nd gear. Switched to 75w90 gear oil and after a few months the crunchiness disappeared. Interestingly, Toyota went back to specifying gear oil on the 90-93 Celicas and later as well.

i've noticed a big improvement after changing to 75w90 gear oil as well. same as what rick said on the later celicas. if you look it up, the S series transmission changed over from ATF to gear oil even when it's the same S53/S54 transmissions. ATF is alright, but i think at the age of our cars, it's too thin...

You must have read my mind. I was going to ask the difference in transmissions. Looks like I will be trying the 75w90. You know it was popping out of 5th pretty bad, even with just minor acceleration. After I put in the new ATF it helped, so maybe the 75w90 will resolve the issue fully.

I think it calls fro 2.6 quarts, do you recommend I put that exact amount back in only? I have heard of people putting in more than needed to get to the refill hole to start to come back out.

    Thanks again for the help!

Also any preferred brand for the 75w90 oil? Thinking about Royal Purple. Expensive, but may be best to not cut corners.

Overkill. You could get away with a nice sythentic 75w90 gear oil.

I'm running MT90 plus 2 bottles of Ford XL3 friction modifier in mine. That helped eliminate my LSD clunk and some drivetrain noise I had.

Ok, I guess I won't waste money where not needed. I really do think the fluid change might help it out. When I'm in 5th and cruising 65 if I put a little tension on the shifter I can lightly put 1-2 lbs of pressure and it will pop out. Maybe something like that thicker gear oil will help. I'll let you all know in a couple weeks when I get it changed.

What oil are you all using in your rear differential? Same weight?

I have a service manual, I just need to dig it out of storage.

I'm not using any oil in my rear differential.

One last thing, the passenger side cv axle shaft seal (the one that is on the transmission where cv axle goes into) I had a leak on a sunday on a cross country trip and put a cheap seal in as it was all I could get. Well it's leaking again. Are there any tricks to getting that seal in place? It's way in there and hard to reach. Last time we used a flanged pipe and did it very softly. However I'm not sure if that worked, it was a side of the road type fix, and maybe we messed it up. Any advice or links to a cv swap would be great. Thank you

Your oil seal should not be "way in there"

It should be flush with the machined surface of the tranny the following pic is from a rav4
tranny but same idea as the passenger side of a celica tranny
    [IMG]

this pic is the drivers side of a celica tranny its easier to change cause you can unbolt the piece
    [IMG]

you can see the macined ring, to the right you can see a 42mm socket or a bit bigger and the old
oil seal inserted into it ready to be installed (if it was the new seal)
Make sure the socket is bigger than the hole so you can't drive the oil seal in to deep

Here the new seal has been installed

Thanks for the pictures and help. On my Celica I have the standard output/shaft seal with the small spring. The issue I had, and maybe because it was done on the side of the road was getting my arm plus something to push the seal into the transmission into that space. It seems like one side is easy, but the other side is deep from the wheel well to the transmission. Probably just because I was in the worst of conditions, but it saved me for the 1500 follow on miles home. I'll look at it when I get in, maybe I just have a bad memory of the event lol. Thanks for the help!

Ok that looks more like it. You used a large socket to get it seated? Did you also do a little bearing grease?

I'm in Sherbrooke, Qc about six months per year. Pretty rare to see Celicas up there, so I'm glad to see you have one!

Haha Awesome! That red one looks super clean! I also have a 89 Alltrac. I'll try to get some pics next week. You one up'd me with your third one! I maybe driving my 89 GTS back up to Canada, still trying to decide. Only reason I wouldn't is b/c of the winters.
