Well, the semester has started, and with it a ton of homework. But being that we get to choose the vehicle, I will take this opportunity to learn more about the ST 165 :)

We were told that it is allowed to ask other knowledgeable people (as we would never be left completely alone as a mechanic, and should always have the ability to ask...) so I will...

The homework is to list and explain the inputs and outputs for the bcm/pcm etc. I have my BGB in front of me and know some of the basic ones plus studying the schematics.

So, after a somewhat fruitless search, and not feeling like digging through every post on here...can y'all help me with some of the inputs to the ECU?

Thanks in advance and No it's not cheating LOL

The bgb does show all the connections to the ECU. Just look in the electrical section.

Yeah, I've got about a page written so far, but am a bit naive as to the function of some of the sensors. I also have to figure out which ones are true input and what is output besides hooking up the OBD I.

Does a knock sensor send a voltage pulse to the ecu when there is a knock? I'm having a hard time on this one and am told it needs to be technical, so the usual "listens for a knock and tells the ecu" isn't acceptable... I had the BGB out and the schematics all laid out when the instructor checked to see what vehicles we were working on...but I had some of the inputs and outputs crossed, I've since fixed that and have a better grasp of which are which (OMG I have to THINK! haha!)

Also, there is the ECT and the Water coolant temp sensor....but I'm not finding the difference on these either...

this is a fun way to do this.
any sensor you question, google that sensor. you'll be able to find the function. most things like EGT are acronyms. EGT = Exhaust Gas Temp. that should explain a lot there.

Yeah, It's coming along well so far :) It seems that the 165 was quite ahead of most cars at the time from what I'm finding (and compared to the other people doing mid/late 80's vehicles in class). I've searched all the acronyms so have them spelled out on my report... ECT and Water temp are what I'm researching now (yeah, the names make it obvious, but why two?) I will solve this mystery! LOL

I think that you'll find most 80's toyotas were ahead of just about every other manufacturer during that time.

i second that 80s toyotas actually make sense in their wiring strategies if you dont believe it look up anything late model with separate modules for everything....over engineered pos's ....i love the classic yotas. On a side note is that a celica tattoo?.......very ballsy and incredibly cool thought about it for the last 15 years just never had the balls to go through it.

Yup! It was my bday present from Hubby a couple years ago. :D

I much prefer working on the pre to early 90's yotas and scoobies than anything else... I'm dreading ever having to work on a Northstar.

one temp sensor works for the gauge only
one works for the fan only (ect)
