So as many of you know ive been working on my trac for about a year and a half, ive gone through alot of shit with it, (bought it with the motor already out of it and half the parts missing ect ect...) I just got her running 2 months ago and iv been having constant problems with it. Seems like every time i fix something 5 other things go wrong with it, Ive poured over $4000.00 into this car and havent got any returns out of it. Its just constant worrying on whether or not its gonna make it through. I dont have the time or place to work on it anymore. So im thinking about getting rid of it. Should it stay or should it go?

these cars are a labor of love. sure there are times that you get tired and frustrated with them. but if you love her then keep her.

  3. If you decide to get rid of it...I might be interested in the 3sgte if you want to sell the engine... :D

I'm in the same boat as you man, I've put mine up for sale as I've only stuck so much into it and I can see it becoming more and more of a money pit so I'd rather get out before I'm to far gone. Don't get me wrong I love the trac and everything about it but it's alot of work that i'd rather sell it to someone who's willing to put all their effort into it.

    I say keep.

Mine's STILL not on the road...and somehow I manage to keep the passion and run this website lol....

It's your call in the end....but like Mafix said if ya love it you'll keep it....if anything put it on the backburner until you're comfortable blowing money on it.....

Thanks guys, i think i was just kinda in a bad mood becuz of all the crap tats been going wrong with it. Ive got bad turbo seals, a big ass hole in the flex pipe, leaking valve cover gasket a vaccum leak somewhere behind the intake. Its just so much crap and it sucks because i know how to fix it but i dont have anywhere or anytime to do it. But i think im just gonna take it to work with me and have it fixed there, it will cost some bucks but it will be worth it im sure.

Well I definetely know where your coming from.

I would conservatively estimate $15,000 in my trac so far and its still got a
    -leaky brake line
    -cracked windshield
    -left front suspension bottoms out
-no 2 body panels line up
-rusty rear fenders/passenger side rocker panel
-drivers side window doesn't close properly
-vibrations when I get above 100kph
-both front outer CV boots are ripped

Now my problem is a bit different from you. I hurt my back about 25 years ago and this past december I hurt it again and so far it has not totally healed so I have

-ST185 front suspension (struts/springs) that I want to swap, not sure if they'll fit but I'll try
    -front half shafts
-2 front wheel bearings & 1 rear wheel bearing
    -new calipers and rotors
    -ST185 3 piece drive shaft
    -ST185 LSD rear diff
    -ST205 rear sub frame
-whiteline front and rear sway bars
-cusco rear strut brace & floor brace

All sitting in my garage along with the Trac waiting for me to install them and I know that chances are I'll do something to fuck up my back again during the installation of all these parts but I love my 4th gens so I know that I'll take the chance of fucking my back up for another 4 months or worse just so I can get my Trac running as well as possible.

We all sink alot of money into our cars and in retrospect could have probably made some wiser investments. I know that for the amount I have in my car it should have a ST205 engine/tranny in it and be floating down the highway like a new car but I had only owned GTS's before and didn't know about JDM engines or much else about All Tracs until I got mine so I left it up to the Toyota dealership to source a new engine for it and do alot of repairs on it. Now they did a good job and I have not had any engine issues it has allways strated/run/boosted fine but that cost me almost $10,000 at the toyota dealership on top of the $2000 I paid for the car so like I said we all spend alot of money on these cars and I'm the worst but I originally bought a 4th gen GTS 10 or more years ago because of my back problem I found the GTS very comfortable to sit in and have had a 4th gen ever since.

So you have a tough choice to make. I had to seriously consider going out and buying a new car and give up working on my cars but thats not me. I need to be out working on some project when I can, I was just reaching down to pick up a log to throw in the woodstove when I fucked my back, it was only a small log 16" long maybe 5 pounds but I guess I did something wrong and nows it's 4 months later and almost better so what your willing to do will really depend on how much you like working on cars (and you really have to like working on cars if you own a Trac because everything is jammed in there so tight that you practically have to pull the engine every time you want to work on anything) and how much you like your Trac.

For me I got to go flying by the cops in one of the first snow storms of the winter. I was on a 2 lane highway in each dirrection and all the traffic (a steady line of it) was crawling along in the slow lane like a giant catapiler going maybe 80kph and in amongst all this traffic is a police car slogging it out in the slow lane with all the other turtles and I go flying by in the fast lane doing 110kph. One of the Tracs finer moments.

So I'm voting KEEP ....they can be a pain or cause you pain but they can be alot of fun too.

I'd hang-on to the 'trac, all that time and $ spent for nothing?
Man Vs. machine, you will win in the end and that feeling is priceless :D

It might be best to sell it and get another Celica, maybe a GT-S instead. I would think that the 165's would be slightly less reliable by design, but I have never even driven a turbo'ed vehicle :p. 5th generation might be worth looking into as well.

I am completely happy with my '86 GT-S, and it only seems to need body work; although I have only driven it twice in my parking lot (need to get insurance first).

My vote is on keeping the car or getting a different Celica, and my anti-vote is on anything brand new :p.

    Good luck regardless :).

Ive owned every model ST GT GTS of the 4th gen and nothing compares to the all tracs power. Once you get boosted you never go back!
