As alot you you may kno I am in the middle of redoing my whole car.(Painting, Engine, Interior, Suspension, Weight Reduction.)
I'm wanting to do a swap in my car, But I am tossing around many options for the swap. SO i figured that i would just ask and get the opinion of everyone one here, To see what swap I should do.

I am open for doing any of them, I just want to get everyones opinion.

imo the red top is better if you want to keep is stock (no turbo lag with good power and economy), the gte is better if you wanna tune it since its easier to get more power out of a turbo motor.

    ?
The 185 has more aftermarket support?

What does the 185 have that the 165 doesnt?

What has to be done to run a 185 in our cars?

    ST165 has 190HP
ST165 have to do alot of one off work

    ST185 has 225HP
    ST185 has better head design
    ST185 has more aftermarket

More wiring work to get in to run. You have to put a combination of both 165 and 185 harness for it work right. Just think of it this way. You going from OBD 0 to OBD 1. There is just alot more wiring to make it work.

black top! cheaper than a beams and wont explode if the belt goes! I hear they make about 160 WHP stock, and with an ECU upgrade will push 180 WHP stock. If your gonne be redoing the wiring one way ro anoyher its always an option : D What about a 3rd or 4th gen 3sge?

The third generation 3S-GE was produced from 1994 to 1999. Power output was increased to 177 bhp (132 kW, 180 PS) over the gen 2, while torque figures stayed the same. It received a minor revision in 1996 for emissions (EGR) which reduced power output to 173 bhp (125 kW, 170 PS) @ 7000 rpm.

Sorry, 4th gens are beams. Figured they would be less than a 3000 dollar beams, and not self destruct if a timing belt went.

I've been reading up on 185, It says that the 185 has a tranny intercooler or something along those lines to prolong the tranny life? it is going to be a problem with me blowin up FE tranny if i do that swap?

Do i have to use a FE Flywheel with the FE tranny or can I stick with the 185 flywheel?

What bout the Starter. Which one can i use with the FE tanny? the GE or FE

and for the CV axles I would use the GTS right?

The later model 165s come with a Transmission oil cooler as well as the 185s.

With the 4wd gearboxes they are all interchangable, ie I run a 205 gearbox on mine and the starter motor bolts straight on, the only change was swapping the actual gearbox mounts over and the speedo take off.

I dont know re the FE gearbox though, but would say the problems would be the same no matter if 185/165 used because the gearbox bolt points are the same.

The 185 does have a better cylinder head which can equal more torque, but you would def need to go either top mount with an RC box or FMIC, the std air to air top mount found on the 185 is not very good at all and would need a scoop on your bonnet to work.

Bolt on part wise, both over in the UK are similar, my mates 185 runs 299bhp with a hybrid/full zorst/downpipe/fmic/and ebc set to 0.9bar! which beats my similar set up ( with a much older turbo design of hybrid) by 40bhp!

One issue is the fuel rail, as much more over 300bhp and fueling for 3 and 4 can be an issue with the standard fuel rail, I have heard it said that the 165 rail is better and easy to upgrade with bigger injectors.

The 185 exhaust manifold is off a better design and is a lot less prone to the cracking the 165s suffer from

With an swap, if you are considering runing more boost, I would totally recomend at least taking the head off and going to a MHG along with uprated head bolts, the standard headgasket on the 185 is not known for its durabilty.

Saying all this you guys have much better aftermarket in the US for 165 than the uk, which is much much more focused on 205 and 185.

Cant help re the other qs sorry but thought would add feedback re 165vs 185.

From my research, I would have to recommend a 2nd generation 3S-GE. I don't know much about turbo lag, but would be more hesitant towards the turbo'ed models. I'm sure a red/black top would be the best if you can afford it though :).

Does anyone know if you can replace the intake system on the 1st gen 3S-GE's with an ACIS 2nd gen system? ACIS looks a lot nicer than T-VIS from my reading. Second generation 3S-GTE's use T-VIS instead of ACIS like the GE's, so that may be a disadvantage.

    Cheers!

how strict are the smog laws in OR? I mean if you can honestly get away with a 2nd gen 3sge, that would be cool. or the 185 would be cool too. but if you have to worry bout legality, then i would lean more towards the 185 swap, cuz you can register it as a later model celica, i believe.
