Any of you guys double-clutch? If so do you recommend it? I've been reading about it and it seems fun so before I give it a shot I wanted to hear your guys thoughts first.

IT is funn double clutching, when you are racing.... But i wouldnt recommend it, unless you no how to, Cause you can burn your clutch quicker then normal if you do it all the time and dont no how do to it... But it is Fairly easy to learn :D

I double clutch 100% of the time, its a habit now. some people are confused on the concept out there.

Basicly, when you go to down shit into any gear, put the shifter in N position, let out the clutch, pop the gas to get the rev apx. where the they would be in the desired gear, put in the clutch and shift.

Heel Toe is similar, with all of the above being doen while breaking at the same time. I can only roughly do with in my mom corolla, but the pedals on my car arnt spaced well for it

Could anyone explain the perceived benefit from double clutching a modern transmission with double cone syncros?

its a technique used in cars where syncros were not used in the transmission gears. More or less it helped get into gear without grinding the gears it also can be used a a brake for the engine. You really dont need to do it because our trannys have syncro gears.

but mosrt of our trannies have worn synchro gears and so double clutching makes the transition much easier on the poor gear

i agree with heel toe being hard in our cars but once u get used to it its ok i also have size 14 feet so that doesnt help but i got good at it a while ago. i cant do it with the spriont becuase the pedals areso fn close together heh as for double clutching i used to do it but with my loud ass exhaust its kinda annoying

rev matching is all you need.

All I do is rev match on the down shifts...tho my box has no probs, touch wood...

    I double clutch all day.

    I also drive tractor/trailers.

Upshifting is simple, you just rev match.

Downshifting is not actually 'double' clutching. You use the clutch once, depress the clutch, shift out of gear, let off the clutch, rev match, downshift.

If you press the clutch, shift to neutral, rev match, then press the clutch again, you have accomplished the exact same as pressing the clutch once and shifting in once fluid movement.

On occasion I have have a bad habit of transitioning back into the car when getting out of the truck and I find myself not using the clutch, however, most of the time in the car I will use the clutch.

this was really a joke to just emphasize how stupid double clutching is. You absolutely do not need to thats why syncro's were invented. Last time i took the model T for a spin it was a good idea to, but the celica gets around just fine without.

As for down shifting, I dont know what your-guyzes foot work is like, but you dont need to go 1st to netural REV then pull into second. If your worth your shit in driving you should be able to kick the throttle quick enough that its all one motion. Like a heelntoe

you dont need to do it when up shifting, but I disagree with you. If you take my car out for a spin and try to down shift into 3rd or 4th from 5th it will grind the gears unless you double clutch it to match the revs. Its good practice for heel toe driving witch is a good driving/racing technique, it reduces wear on clutch and transmission components. Once you get good at it, its becomes second nature and quick. I can feel how much smoother the car shifts when double clutched vs just sticking it in. Lets say your coasting in neutral at like 60 km/h and u wanna punch it was fast as possible, so you drop to 2nd gear. without double clutchign you will be forcing the engien to spin up to 5000 rpm with via he transmission and clutch vs. rev matching while in neutral and putting the car into 2nd with the engine and trans shaft at 5000.

im with mafix, as he said rev matching is all you need... double clutching is just an extra step to the same end and both are just as easy on the trans. if anything its harder on the car to so that double clutch (aka clutch off clutch then clutch again). but either way... do whatever you like lol

So these are the steps for heel-toe downshift? (From 4th - 3rd)

    1. Start breaking.

    2. Push in clutch.

    3. Go from 4th to neutral.

    4. Rev match while breaking while in neutral.

    5. Move into 3rd gear.

    6. Continue doing steps 2-5 until your in first gear.

Im guessing this is the order?

rev match works fine if your trans is in good shape, but with worn synchros mine grinds without the getting the internals spinning. From what ive learnt online and though videos is that rev matching and double clutch are not the same, as rev matchign wont bring all the parts of the trans up to speed. If you dont feel its nesisary(witch it probably isnt) then just rev match, eather way, not trying to be a dick about it, sorry if it came off that way <3

as for the steps, if you were in 4th and were going to go to 2nd. you would break, and put the car in neutral. wait till your speed is in 2nd gear range, rev match, shift in and let out the clutch, all while still on the brakes, and be righ tn the gass out of the corner saving fractions of a second.
