I have an extra 3-SGE engine. I actually have two, but one has a bad short block, spun the first cylinder bearings, the head still good. The machine shop told me that the crank and block were overheated and are deformed.

I was thinking of rebuilding it and try to get more power out of it. Then finding another 4th or even 5th generation Celica, in better shape then mine, with a bad engine to put it into. Then maybe giving the old one to my son.

What should I do to it? What can I do to it to get more power? Will I be wasting my time and money? Should I just rebuild it to original specifications?

I think your best bet is original specs, with a good intake and exhaust. and then get the timing tuned for max power. Probably be looking at about 160hp

i'm a little confused. are you going to try and fix the overheated block?

No, the block on that engine is done.

I have another complete engine that I want to rebuilt and I am going to have an extra head from the bad block.

I'm surprised the alum head didn't warp but the iron block did....damn!

No kidding... lol I haven't ever heard about an iron block warping, but the aluminum head not warping/cracking... What the hell did you do to that thing? lol But yeah, run that thing with new stock parts, and tune the timing. That's about the best performance you can get, for the buck. If you really wanted, I bet you could turbo it, but I am sure, that isn't recommended. Right Mafix? I think I remember reading somewhere, that you could put a GTE head on it? Mafix would know a lot more... :D

    Sorry for the confusion....

I have two complete engines. One with a bad block and a JDM engine that I bought. I bought the JDM engine and when I took the water pump out to replace, I noticed that it was full of leak stop. So I complained and they sent me another engine. It’s been over two months and they have not asked for the engine back and I am not going to pay to ship it back to them. This is the one that I want to take apart and rebuild.

I did not overheat the engine, I spun the bearings of the first cylinder. But I did overheat the engine a few months before that happen and I replaced the head.

I was driving home from work at two o'clock in the morning. I was tired, head resting on the headrest, not paying attention when the car started to hesitate. I sat up confused and noticed that the temp. gauge was past the red. I really don't know how long I drove the car like that, but it was bad enough that it did not want to run. The problem was a busted radiator hose.

I wonder if that could have weakened the bearings, because once I had it fixed, it never ran the same.

well if you have a spare block and you plan to stay NA, which is fine, i would rebuild it with a little more compression.
