hi I bought a 87 celica vert about a week ago and i was driving on a dark road and went o turn on hi bams by pusig the light bar back and nothing low beams ok and i can flash my high beams and they stey on thats how i ben using them if i really have too but they wont stay on any ideas?
You probably need to test the switch make sure you have continueity between pins 29 & 32 when the lever is in the high beam position
i think your right stig because the highbeam light comes onthe dash but lights dont and like said i can flash high beams but wont stay on
I'm having the same problem as invinciblejets. My lows work and can flash my highs, but my highs won't stay on when set by the switch. I'll try replacing the relay and see what happens...
Changed the headlight relay up front. Results are still the same....:sad i hope its not the wiring itself.
Symptoms were: lights would come on meaning low beam but as soon as I used hi beam it would not come on I had the same problem, I replaced bulbs, relay and fuses only to find out it was the switch on the steering wheel column.
Like I said before I had a similar problem on the Burpcar (pat. pending) a while back... It turned out that the wire bending back and forth for 25 years had a bit of fatigue and was a little hard to see at first ...break was right where the wire entered the socket ... Easy fix to replace std socket from JY and route and re-wrap loom...been tits grandiose ever since Vicdat
if either - your low beams work - or your high beams work then the relay is not the problem as their is only one relay sending 12 volts to the headlights. The problem must be with the wiring or with the switch. If both high or low beams go out at the same time I would suspect the switch as the wiring normally fails at the socket behind the headlight so the wires at both headlight sockets would have to fail at the same time. Test your switch make sure you have continuity between pins 29 & 32 when you have the high beams turned on.
I am experiencing this issue. That is, low beams work, high beams do not work, flash high beams do work. So I should test the switch? Or check the wiring? Sorry, but where? In the steering wheel or the engine bay? Thanks.
Check both at the steering column. You've donated so you should have access to the BGB files, start at BE-16. If the switch tests OK then as Vic says you need to go looking for where the wiring flexes when you put push/pull the headlights stalk to activate high beam, thats probably where the break will be.
Ok, this is a problem becoming more and more as they get older. The problem lies in the plug under the steering column - take the covers off and check out the big plugs coming from the switches, one pin will show signs of rusting or burning. You can either clean it or run a bypass around the plug - there is too much current flowing thru that old rusty plug. If you check the 162 f/b page you will find pics and a thread on this, unfortunately photobucket has screwed things for us here so most of the stuff nowdays is on f/b
I'm still finding for time to work on it but I do have the relevant pages printed out from the BGB. Moreover, wanted to update and say thanks before I open another thread about my wipers suddenly not working. Hmm.
